Manchester Township police responded to the wreck at Whiting Commons on Lacey Road just after 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18. Officers found a black 2020 Hyundai Tucson had caused significant damage to the fronts of H&R Block and Wine World.
Police said an 88-year-old woman from Whiting was driving in the strip mall parking lot. She accelerated her vehicle, drove over a curb, and crashed into the building.
Investigators said no one else was in the SUV with her during the crash. She was wearing her seatbelt and several airbags were deployed in the vehicle.
The woman injured her neck, back, chest, and face, according to police. She was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River for treatment and she's expected to survive her injuries.
The crash investigation is ongoing, but police said in a news release that "driver error appears to be the primary contributing factor."
